Models, tools, agents, and automation
Why this matters
Many people mix these terms together. If you want to compare AI products or decide what to use, you need a cleaner vocabulary.
Simple definitions
- Model, the engine that generates or predicts.
- Tool, the product or interface you use.
- Agent, a system that can take multiple steps toward a goal, often using tools and making limited decisions.
- Automation, a repeatable process that runs on rules or triggers (may or may not include AI).
Easy comparison
- model = engine
- tool = product you use
- agent = multi-step worker
- automation = repeatable workflow
Common mistake
Not every AI tool is an agent. Many tools only answer prompts. They are tools, not agents.
Quick check
AThe model is the product you log into.
BThe tool is the interface you use, the model is the engine behind it.
CAutomation always requires AI.
